In his The Lives of the Horses, Zoran Anchevski has assembled an impressive stable of well-known mythological and historical horses to explore contemporary issues of power, identity and conser vation. Using first person narratives, some epic in tone, others more lyrical, the accomplished poet draws the reader with rhythmical verses that race strongly in battles against injustice, that gallop through rich cultural settings, and that canter towards peaceful sunsets. Such a work for me is undoubtedly Zoran Anchevski’s long poem The Lives of the Horses – destined to be a touchstone in Macedonian poetry for generations to come, no matter whether readers gallop or trot with its memorable verse. A breathtaking and uniquely masterful work, a real gem in contemporary Macedonian literature.
